Sleep Apnea and Snoring
Sleep Apnea is a disorder where a person's ability to breathe is impaired. This does not
allow them to get enough restful sleep, and thus they are tired all the time. The
greatest danger is if someone is so tired they fall asleep while driving a car.
A Sleep Apnea appliance may be an alternative to patients that cannot tolerate a
Positive Airway Pressure unit (CPAP). In many cases it can be used with a CPAP to improve
its performance. Even after a patient has a surgical procedure to open the airway,
repositioning the jaw during sleep may further assist in opening the airway even
more.
A Sleep Apnea appliance is worn while sleeping and fits on your teeth like teeth
whitening trays. They are designed to hold the jaw forward and open the airway so
that nasal breathing is improved. It sometimes takes a few appointments to adjust
is just right to get the best result.
